Block Watch
Last Update:  14 February 2012

The Town of Hunts Point is a Block Watch community. Block Watch is a simple program that organizes residents into groups that watch out for each other and report criminal and/or suspicious behavior to local law enforcement. The program has been shown to be an effective deterrent to crime at the neighborhood level because it encourages neighbors to help police by acting as additional sets of eyes and ears. Community block-watches can address all types of crime, but their primary focus is typically residential burglary and other crimes around the home, such as larceny, vandalism, and car prowls. Block Watch is truly a grassroots effort based on each resident's knowledge of their neighbors and their neighborhood and their desire to help keep that neighborhood safe and secure. This year, Hunts Point will be incorporating Map Your Neighborhood into our Block Watch program. This program gives neighbors the information they need to assist each other in case of an emergency.

The Town is divided into nine zones. Each zone has a designated Captain that coordinates Block Watch activities for their area. Block Watch captains will be contacting residents within their Block Watch zones to continue work on these important neighborhood-safety programs. We encourage everyone's participation.

As always, there are things you can and should do to help secure your home:

  • Lock all door and windows, all day and all night.
  • Set burglar alarms at night and whenever you are gone.
  • Park all cars in a locked garage.
  • Use a locking mailbox.

And to help secure your neighborhood, be sure to report any suspicious activity by calling 911 immediately. The Police would rather have you report something that turns out to be harmless than hesitate to report an activity that seems inappropriate in some way. They are here to help keep our community safe.
